CASE STUDY
Background
Dubbed “one of the best investments” that could have been made in the Auckland transport system by Phil Twyford, the Minister of Transport at the time, the Puhinui Station Interchange was opened on the 26th of July and is a development of considerable significance for the city and the local community.
Considered an entry point to the city of Auckland, the interchange is a crucial piece of transport infrastructure that links Auckland to the airport and contributes tocreating a connected Tāmaki Makaurau of the future.
With such a substantial role for the new building both from a logistical and societal point of view, Jasmax – the multi-disciplinary practice behind the project – considered it paramount to create an outstanding and unique passenger experience.
Challenge
The station’s design was instrumental to achieving the desired outcome – and the roof took centre stage in bringing the architectural vision to life. Designed to fulfil the functional requirements of the space, the roof also plays an essential role as a critical identity element of the new development. Emulating the silhouette of a feather extending over the commuters going about their day, this distinct space undoubtedly forms a visual landmark for the local community.
With such specific creative requirements, it was crucial to specify a product that could bring the concept to life while still providing the required functionality and, importantly, satisfying fire rating requirements.
Solution
Jasmax turned to Innowood, one of the leading Australian manufacturers in composite building and architectural materials, including screening, cladding, and ceiling. In collaboration with The Building Agency – Innowood’s trusted New Zealand partner – the brand provided a solution designed specifically in accordance with Jasmax’s creative vision: CL30025 Clip Fixed Cladding System.
The quick and easy to install system keeps all the fixings concealed and, as a result, offers a streamlined look with a clean, high-end finish. The uniform panelling produces subtle shadows between the boards, which offers added depth and dimension, suitably enhancing the scale of the design. At
the same time, the warm look and feel of timber generate a pleasant and inviting ambience throughout the space.
On top of giving life to the creative vision of the team at Jasmax, the low maintenance profile of the product was
a clear benefit for a ceiling application, which isn’t easy to access. In addition to that, Innowood’s composite timber materials offer excellent fire performance, and the specified system was supplied with an EN13501 B s2-d0 rating, which satisfied the project’s Group 1S rating (NZBC – C3.4A) requirement.
The result is a refined visual outcome that achieves the distinct feather-like look while providing the functional benefits and fire-safety credentials – an excellent blend for a flagship development with an incredibly positive impact on the local community.
